Annual Review December 2000
Waste Management Research Limited Helps Turn Waste Into Wickets.
Waste Management Research Limited, our sister company and Environmental Body under the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme has had another busy year with over 25 funded projects on-going through the year.

One of the larger WMRL projects this year has been at the new Hampshire County Cricket Club ground at West End, to the east of Southampton. A £55,000 donation of Landfill Tax funds from Viridor Waste Management has been used to help in the construction of the new Cricket Academy. It is hoped that this Academy will produce many generations of top quality cricketers for Hampshire (and hopefully England) in the years to come.

The Academy is scheduled to be completed in early 2001, ready for the new cricket season and will be open to anyone in the country.

RECYCLING IN THE NEW FOREST HERITAGE AREA

Following unprecedented approval by Wiltshire County Council Planning Committee, against Officer recommendation, Cleansing Service Group (CSG) have recently implemented recycling activities as an adjunct to their Pound Bottom Landfill operation, near Salisbury. We have assisted CSG in 2000 by preparing an operational Working Plan for the facility and negotiating the Waste Management Licence with the Environment Agency.

The operation involves the direction of all incoming loads containing predominantly construction industry wastes to a surfaced sorting area. A combination of manual and mechanical segregation removes all woods, metals, large concrete/masonry blocks and any contrary materials. The remaining materials are passed through a trommel screen in order to generate a screened secondary aggregate and a fine fraction which can be used for landfill cover.

Environmental controls upon the operation are stringent due to the location of the site within the New Forest Heritage Area. These include provision for collection of all surface water run-off from the sorting and processing areas, noise limits on use of mechanical plant, dust control measures and detailed procedures for the identification and isolation of any inadvertent deliveries of unlicensed wastes.
