Annual Review January 2000

A message from the Chairman
Welcome to the first ever Annual Review from Robert Long Consultancy Limited!  We decided to produce an Annual Review to keep all our friends and clients up-to-date with what we have done during the past year and give some indication of where we’re going in the year ahead.

1999 was a busy year for us with several new staff arriving and a variety of challenging new projects. This Review focuses on some of the staff and some of the projects to give you a better idea of who we are and what we are doing.

In the year ahead we plan to remain focused on consultancy services in wastes management and minerals extraction. We plan to develop and expand our capabilities in contaminated land, environmental monitoring (including noise measurement) and to introduce new technology to improve our efficiency in topographical surveying. We will continue to provide our well established services in planning, licensing, engineering and commercial work such as advising on company acquisitions.

Established in 1984
As this is our first Annual Review, it seems appropriate to mention the origins of the firm. I started the business 15 years ago as a ‘sole trader’ in 1984, working on my dining room table at home in Reading. I had previously worked for three large waste management companies and felt the time was right to start my own small business. My ‘business plan’ was pretty simple; survival! I had a mortgage and children to feed and all the uncertainties of a new business venture.

I was not however, literally single-handed in those days and my wife, Katy, did all the letters and reports on a typewriter given to me by my former employers who were throwing it out.

My earliest clients included Wastecare (then newly acquired by BFI), Wastedrive (then part of the Brengreen Group and later acquired by Biffa) and Shanks & McEwan, before their famous acquisition of London Brick Landfill. I also worked for Blue Circle’s landfill division which was acquired years later by South West Water and now forms a part of Viridor Waste Management.

Our most recent audited accounts, for year ending 30 June 1999, showed a turnover of £1,393,289, up 25% on the previous year. We have grown slowly but surely over the years and today we employ a total of 30 staff.
