Annual Review January 2000

Testwood Lakes Reservoir Scheme
RLCL was involved in this £30 million ongoing project throughout the year and the work continues. Completion is scheduled for 2002. The developer is Southern Water.

The scheme consists of the design and construction of two reservoirs near Southampton. The reservoirs will store water abstracted from the River Test before being treated at the existing Testwood Water Supply Works and supplied to a population of 200,000 around Totton, Southampton and the Isle of Wight.

Testwood Lakes

Stage 1 of the project was completed in 1997 and consisted of the first lake, Little Testwood, a pumping station and transfer pipelines. Approximately 270Ml storage is provided by the 8m deep lake. The Lakes Pumping Station is rated for a maximum throughput of 160Ml/d. The only visible feature is the conical superstructure, designed to blend in with the surrounding area; to maintain the overall positive effect of the scheme. Below ground a 9m deep sub-structure houses four pumps, pipework and valving necessary to allow water to be transferred between the lakes as well as to the supply works. The transfer pipelines comprise of 1km of twin 1,000mm diameter pipelines laid between the existing Testwood Works and the Lakes Pumping Station.

Stage 2 of the project commenced in 1997 and consists of mineral extraction and the construction of Testwood Lake (950Ml storage). The lake will be approximately 8m deep.
Other works planned for the scheme include a nature conservation area, wetlands area, interpretation centre and bird hide.

The mineral extraction is being carried out by Viridor.
Our contribution to this project includes assisting Viridor with topographical surveying, setting out and engineering back-up on all parts of the mineral extraction programme.
