Annual
Review January 2000

Our Sister is an Environmental
Body
In anticipation of the Landfill Tax Regulations which came into force in 1996, we established an ‘Environmental Body’, Waste Management Research Limited
(WMRL).
WMRL is a non-profit distributing company whose board of directors comprises well-known Robert Long Consultancy Limited staff; Bob Long, Ben Arnold and Michael Jones. The purpose of an environmental body is to receive Landfill Tax credit funds from landfill operators and spend the money on ‘approved objects’ as defined in the
regulations.

Our original idea was to specialise in wastes management research but, since the scheme started, we have handled a variety of projects including public amenities, church renovation and education as well as research. One of our earliest projects, which has now come to fruition, was the funding of an educational playbus
( operated by Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council. This aims to heighten
children’s awareness of more sustainable waste management practices such as
minimisation, reuse and
recycling.
The bus itself is an exercise in recycling. It is a 20-year old vehicle now enjoying its new life after major refurbishment and refitting works. The playbus was officially launched by Councillor Doreen Farrell, Mayor of Walsall on 13 October 1999.
