Description |

The County Council own a large 40 hectare municipal waste landfill site in the south east of England which ceased operations in 1995 after approximately 75 years of tipping.
The development of a scheme for the final restoration of the site has been dependent upon gaining a better understanding of its geological and hydrogeological setting, and the nature of the buried wastes through various site investigations, risk assessments and ongoing environmental monitoring. |

Role
of Robert Long Consultancy Limited
Robert Long Consultancy Limited was instructed initially in 1998 to investigate the environmental conditions in and around the site and carry out various site investigations, environmental monitoring reviews and risk assessments.
The main site investigation in 1998 allowed for increased monitoring of leachate, groundwater, surface water and landfill gas through the installation of wells and boreholes. Fortnightly monitoring since early 1999 has resulted in the development of a significant database of environmental information that has fed into a full Regulation 15 Groundwater Risk Assessment. This model has subsequently been used as a base for designing restoration scheme scenarios for the site.
Robert Long Consultancy Limited is also involved in advising on the technical design of the restoration cap and the supervision of the engineering works.
