Annual Review December 2001
New Access Approved...

After lengthy negotiations with Wiltshire County Council Robert Long Consultancy has secured planning permission for an alternative and improved access to Moor Farm Sandpit on the A36 (T), south of Salisbury, on behalf of Cleansing Service Group Limited (CSG).

Proposed sand extraction area lying South of A36(T), showing the new access corridor

Planning permission was granted for sand extraction and restoration by landfill at the site in 1991 with access involving extensive earthworks and the realignment of a minor road. Subsequent signalisation of the nearby major road junction presented the opportunity to establish a safer and more cost-effective alternative access.  Strong local opposition to the proposals, based upon fear of significant HGV movements through the village of Whiteparish, was eventually overcome through negotiation of a legal agreement.  This limits the number of vehicles allowed through the village and requires the operator to establish CCTV and video facilities to ensure enforcement.

Unusually the Planning Authority initiated a special seminar immediately prior to the Committee decision allowing all parties to air their views on the proposals.

RLCL has assisted CSG in setting up a Public Liaison Group for the site and landscape screening works are scheduled to be carried out shortly.  Mineral extraction will commence as soon as possible after completion of the new access.
