Sundon Landfill Restoration...

During July 2001 John Gilford of Bedfordshire County Council awarded J Breheny Contractors Limited the first of the two contracts that will be let to facilitate long-term environmental management and control at the Sundon Landfill site, near Luton, Bedfordshire. 

The two contracts will provide waste profiling, capping, leachate management, surface water and gas management works at the 42 hectare site and are expected to run for the next 2½ to 3 years. 

The engineering design and contract documentation have been developed jointly by Bedfordshire County Council and Robert Long Consultancy.  RLCL will be responsible for the administration and management of the contracts including CQA supervision and testing. 

The scope of works will include:-

  • 400,000m² of capping and restoration works;

  • The importation of 400,000 tonnes of clay;

  • The construction of more than 150 gas and leachate management wells;

  • The construction of over 6km of drains; and

  • The construction of over 5km of gas management pipework.

“The scale of this project shows the commitment of Bedfordshire County Council towards protection of the environment” says Jon Clark, Project Director for RLCL.  “We have been involved in monitoring and design works for the project for some two years.  The construction work is now underway and is progressing well; our engineering staff will be on site for the duration of the two contracts”.
