Re-colonises Trumps Farm Landfill site...
Following the formal closure of the Trumps Farm Landfill site in 1998,
Robert Long Consultancy has been assisting Surrey County Council with
the implementation of a restoration and landscaping strategy. |
|
The overall intention
is to restore the 17 hectare site to a mixture of native woodland,
agricultural grazing and meadow fields so as to complement and enhance
the character of the surrounding landscape features. |

The
site will be entirely surrounded by a varied arrangement of mixed
native woodland block planting with the small field system being
divided by tall hedgerows and tree belts. Hedgerows have been
orientated so as to link proposed planting areas to existing woodland;
“a useful strategy which connects
habitats and speeds up colonisation”
says Owen Humphries, Senior Consultant.
An additional feature of the scheme is the old settlement ponds.
“These have been deepened and
extensively enlarged and being created with cliffs, shallows, bays and
islands, will enable us, through careful planting strategies, to
greatly maximise the potential for a variety of wildlife habitats”. |
The contractor, Tilhill Forestry Limited of Surrey, anticipate
completing the planting scheme by spring 2002. Owen adds
“unlike many restoration and
landscaping schemes which falter soon after implementation, the
award of a five-year aftercare and maintenance contract by Surrey
County Council should ensure that the scheme is well established.” |
