Capping and Restoration Works...

Aerial view of Sundon Landfill Site
Sundon landfill site is a closed site, which is
owned by Bedfordshire County Council.
RLCL has been appointed as Engineer and Lead
Consultant whose duties include conceptual and detailed design
works for all aspects of the scheme, Engineer for the Works, CQA
supervision and Environment Agency liaison.
The capping and restoration works comprise the
re-profiling of the waste mass, installation of the landfill gas
and leachate control systems, composite lining system and
surface water management scheme.
The project will include the installation of 149
leachate and landfill gas boreholes, more than 300,000m² of HDPE
geomembrane and more than 200,000m³ of engineered clay.
The access to the site has been subject to
significant scrutiny from the planning authorities with
particular emphasis on traffic volumes in the local villages.
This has resulted in the requirement to construct a 2.8km access
road complete with highway roundabout and a weighbridge and
wheelwash complex.
Site works commenced in June 2003 with the
first phase of the waste re-profiling works and the leachate and
landfill gas management infrastructure. The project is expected
to be completed in three years and emphasises Bedfordshire
County Council’s continued commitment to the protection of the
environment.
