Landfill Investigation
Examples of recent and current projects for the practice which have involved the investigation of completed or partially completed landfill sites, include:-

Regulation 15 Risk Assessment for a clay lined landfill in central England. Fee Value - £17,500.

Site investigation of an old landfill in Surrey to establish the nature and extent of wastes, groundwater contamination plus options and costs for remediation, prior to installation of a new public water supply borehole nearby. This project involved surveys utilising thermographic video, various geophysical techniques and trial pitting. Fee Value - £6,000.

Investigation of former landfill in Devon on behalf of a landowner to assist in litigation against the former operators. This included a review of existing capping, restoration and leachate management works and advising on the necessary remedial works and their costs. Fee Value - £14,000.

Site investigation of a nearly completed landfill in Hampshire on behalf of the landowner to assist in compensation negotiations. This project involved extensive borehole drilling, trial pitting and installation of groundwater and soil gas monitoring points. Fee Value - £10,000.

Desk study and evaluation of costs of remedial works associated with construction of an extension to a completed Local Authority landfill in South Glamorgan. Fee Value - £2,500.

Detailed deskwork study of geology, hydrogeology and history of former domestic waste landfill in Somerset. Investigation of landfill gas migration problems and existing control techniques. Advising housing developers in negotiations with Local Authority and remedial measures. Fee Value - £6,000.

Evaluation of management and liabilities at an operational landfill site in West Glamorgan as part of pre-acquisition research for a national waste management contractor. Fee Value - £4,000.

Assistance to Dorset County Council Waste Regulation Authority in the investigation of leachate and gas migration from a large domestic waste site. The investigation methods included an EM survey, 2-D resistivity imaging and use of ground penetrating radar to characterise the geology and highlight the pollution plume. These methods were calibrated by narrow diameter continuous core window sampling to confirm the geology. Fee Value - £4,000.

Geological and hydrogeological investigation of old limestone quarry used for landfilling in Dorset. Work included rock discontinuity analysis to predict leachate migration pathways. The investigations preceded an environmental monitoring plan and a design for the capping and restoration of the site including gas and surface water management. Fee Value - £6,000.

Geological, geotechnical and hydrogeological investigation for the development of a landfill site in Hampshire. Work included a borehole investigation, materials testing and engineering design. Fee Value - £15,000.

Investigation of landfill leachate by analysis of borehole pumping and recovery tests and installation of piezometers at a site in Dorset. Computer modelling of landfill to assess methods of leachate management head reduction. Fee Value - £4,000.

Risk assessment in respect of landfill gas migration towards a residential property at a site in south Hampshire. Fee Value - £1,000.

Investigation of hydrogeological and geotechnical conditions in support of a planning application for extraction of sand and clay, and subsequent landfilling at a site in Hampshire. The site overlies a confined aquifer which gives particular implications in respect to depth of excavation, slope stability and the hydrogeological regime. Fee Value - £2,000.

Auditing and valuation of 45 landfill sites nationwide in support of acquisitions by various landfill operators. Fee Values - +£400,000.

Review of boundary conditions at a leaky dilute and disperse site followed by engineering design of a surface leachate collection and treatment system including the use of reed beds. Fee Value - £5,000.

A desk study and site investigation into the geological and hydrogeological conditions present at a landfill site in Hampshire. Geotechnical materials testing and suitability assessments prior to agreeing design details with the Environment Agency. Fee Value - £15,000.

Desk study and preliminary site investigation into the hydrogeological regime present in the proximity of an old landfill site in Dorset. Work included a borehole investigation, soakaway tests and a rock mass discontinuity survey at local exposures. Fee Value - £10,000.
